After a 3 year pause succeeding the release of the duo’s joint single ‘Do 2 Me’, Flwr Chyld and Grimm Lynn have returned to prove once again, the endless possibilities of their artistic range. This time it’s through their shared EP ‘Cafe Noir’ released on April 26. ‘Café Noir’ is intended to serve as a third space for an evening of black collective escapism, where its music offers the sonic background that guides the listener to dive into the boundless avenues of exploration within the space. ‘Ms. Ebony Brown’ is the second release from the EP, setting the tone for what fans have to expect as the duo embarks on their 12-city North American tour starting early June.
Flwr Chyld epitomizes the essence of an artist. He is a pioneer of a sound that lives at the intersection of Alternative R&B and Neo-Soul. Influences from Funk, House, and Soul have enabled this Atlanta born producer/musician/singer to have the skill of past maestories, yet maintain the flexibility and energy of a modern contemporary creative. His breakout 2019 EP ‘Iridescent Luv’ made serious waves in the underground indie R&B music scene. He has kept this momentum, securing the front cover of Spotify’s R&B Rising playlist alongside Grimm Lynn.
Grimm Lynn is a singer/songwriting/creative hailing from Atlanta, GA. Having grown up listening to evergreen talents from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, all the way to Pharell and The Neptunes, this artist has a musical palette like no other. Drawing from this diverse sonic landscape, since Lynn’s debut effort ‘Pragma’, his sound has developed into a kaleidoscope of diverse tastes and styles. His contribution to ‘Cafe Noir’ showcases a fine tuned ability to blend elements from across the musical spectrum, resulting in a captivatingly soulful listening experience.
‘Ms. Ebony Brown’ opens up with a groovy drum pattern that gently lures you into the melt of the rest of the song. This is followed by a funky bass that gently sweeps in to carry the fluid rhythm. This bears semblance to the silky-smooth synth progressions of neo-soul staples such as Erykah Badu and Sade with a slight bounce remnant to the likes of softer productions of Mos Def, as highlighted in the duo’s DJ session ‘Cafe Noir – Sesh I’. There is an aura of elegance to the funked sound that welcomes themes of comfort and sophistication, aimed within the ‘Cafe Noir’ space of a collective black experience. As such, the musicality of the track gives room for the sensuality of its lyrics to retain a unique sense of poise and play that can easily be lost when dealing with the topic of lust or passion.
It is clear that Flwr Chyld and Grimm Lynn have mastered the great balance incorporating the
sophistication and technical skill of Funk, Soul, and Jazz, into more contemporary themes, making a sound comprehensible to the masses.
These two are on the cusp of a new age of musical experimentation.
