Striking while the iron is hot, the multi-faceted, ever evolving Shay Lia gets dancefloors moving with new single ‘ON THE LOW’ out now via AWAL. This is the latest single from her upcoming LP FACETS, due for release on 20th October.
Through ‘ON THE LOW’, Shay uses her hushed vocals to question her lover’s intentions and express frustration with the on again/off again nature of their entanglement, “All the games you play, I dare you tell the truth,” she challenges. Shay finds herself in comfortable territory amongst the instrumentalwhich provides the infectiously funky backdrop we are used to hearing her against. Production is provided by Kaytranada, this release being the duo’s 10th collaboration and a true testament to their undeniable chemistry. The winding bassline, paired with melodic flourishes and Shay’s alluring vocal make for the perfect combination to have feet moving and hips swaying across dancefloors globally.
Shay gives insight into the partnership with long-time collaborator Kaytranada, sharing that ‘ON THE LOW’ “demonstrates our respective growth patterns as artists.” She continues: “When you listen to it, you can tell we have both been explorative in our growth over time. This production sat on my computer for years and it wasn’t connecting for me until I saw Kaytra in Paris this past June. I felt reinspired and we were able to tap back into our natural way of collaborating and sharing a frequency.”
Speaking on her upcoming album FACETS and its title, Shay Lia explains the project “speaks to all of the lives I’ve lived in different cities, countries, times and spaces. It’s impossible for me to sit comfortably in one specific genre because while my vision is clear, my influences and experiences are layered… it’s an intentional demonstration of all sides of me and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it, feel it and see parts of themselves in it.”
Fans of the eclectic artist will be happy to know that Shay Lia will be embarking on a UK/Europe tour during November of this year, concluding a performance at Camden Assembly in London on 28th November. Then in February 2024, Shay Lia will head across the pond where she’ll bring FACETS live to key cities including a final stop at Los Angeles’ intimate venue, The Moroccan Lounge on March 2nd. General sale coincides with the release of ‘ON THE LOW’ on 15th September.
Throughout her career, Shay Lia has illustrated her capability as a deftly adaptable singer/songwriter. Most famously she initially gained critical acclaim via her collaborations with Kaytranada, providing vocals for some of his biggest hits including Leave Me Alone and CHANCES, supplying soulful ear-candy for his crowd moving beats. Shay Lia has gone on to further establish herself in the dance and R&B spheres through her consistently powerful releases. Her debut LP Dangerous exemplified her diverse range of sound in dazzling fashion, as she seemingly shifted through genres spanning disco, soul, R&B and more without missing a step. Similarly her recent Solaris EP saw her furtherbroaden horizons, infusing reggae, afrobeats and other diasporic sounds into her music. Keen to continue collaborating with other world renowned artists, Shay Lia has worked alongside Kojey Radical, BADBADNOTGOOD, DāM-FunK, Buddy and more.
Remaining on the cutting edge, Shay Lia continues to express herself in any avenue that she sees fit. The artist born in France, raised in Djibouti and now residing in Montreal, brings her worldly experience to each release in a way that is both genuine and captivating.
