SHEERKHAN EP DUE FOR RELEASE JUNE 1st 2023
Born and raised in South London, but with familial roots that stretch back generations to Guyana, Sabiyha can retroactively plot the path to where she is now; creating authentic, thought-provoking music that celebrates her culture and heritage, whilst also boldly drawing on experiences from her life as integral inspiration.
Kicking off her 2023, Sabiyha is announcing details of her debut EP ‘Sheerkhan’ which will be released on 1ST June. Sheerkan, which is Sabiyha’s mother’s maiden name, is an unflinching, raw portrait of Guyanese culture, queerness and self-discovery, taking the listener on a deeply cathartic & captivating journey.
Newest cut ‘Note To Self’ is out now; a heartfelt, headstrong track about being honest with the parts of yourself that scare you and hold you back. The lyrics weave through themes of hope, understanding, frustration and strength as Sabiya paints the picture of internal conflict.
“This song is about two sides of myself having a conversation” explains Sabiyha. “..my saboteur and the part of me that wants to love and be better for myself”.
Sabiyha is an artist who’s unafraid to expose herself completely in her songwriting, both the dark and the light, with community, comradery and connection as her inner fire. Her recent releases have already gathered early support from the likes of The Guardian, Gal-Dem, The Line Of Best Fit, Nadine Shah, Jess Iszatt and Radio 1’s Jack Saunders.
Last year’s ‘Afterparty’, – also lifted from the incoming Sheerkhan EP – was her most personal release to date, where Sabiyha bravely opened up about her struggle with self-harm. The release was supported by Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) who published Sabiyha’s self-penned open letter about her experience and ongoing recovery. The letter is here.
As she weaves her reality through her music, Sabiyha is ready to set bigger, bolder plans into motion with 2023 set to be her year. More new music and live dates will be announced in due course.
