The British singer, songwriter and DJ, who previously released three critically acclaimed albums with her band The xx, will release her solo debut album ‘Mid Air‘ on September 8 via Young/Beggars.
On Thursday 28 June we have Romy as a guest at the Beggars office in Amsterdam for a press day. If you are interested in speaking to Romy that day, I would love to hear from you. The next day she plays a DJ set at Down The Rabbit Hole festival.
To celebrate the news about the album, Romy is releasing her latest single today, the Fred again…produced “Loveher“. In addition to being the album’s opening track, it is also the first song created for the record. Romy and Fred were first paired up to write songs for other people, but their friendship quickly grew and the musical connection turned out to be a spark for something new. After writing “Loveher”, a pop song about the intimacy of falling in love with a woman, Fred asked Romy: “Who could this be for?”. To which Romy replied: “I tentatively said… ‘maybe me?’”. Loveher is a proud and positive queer love story that marked the beginning of Mid Air.
Mid Air is an album about celebrating life, sanctuary and salvation on the dance floor. It is an album that deals with love, grief, relationships, identity and sexuality and is a love letter to the queer clubs where Romy found community and connection. It’s a coming-out album in a way, even though she came out a long time ago in her personal life, but it’s also a coming-through album – through sadness and heartache, on her way to euphoria.
On Mid Air, Romy is working again with producers Fred.. and Stuart Price, and with her bandmate Jamie xx on the recent single “Enjoy Your Life”. Mid Air also includes previous single (and crossover anthem) “Strong” and is the perfect summary of a sound Romy describes as “emotional music to dance to”. It’s a sound that will unite dance floors, incorporating Romy’s love of club classics and classic songwriting, and that finds the sweet spot – like much of Romy’s favorite music – between euphoria, escapism, sadness and melancholy.
