ANNOUNCES “LITTLE DEMON BOY” EP
“Lovely indie pop…hinged on simplistic, straightforward songwriting” – NYLON
“Feeling in step with the intimacy of a song from Clairo and the sonic landscape of a Phoebe Bridgers track” – Consequence
“Dreamy pop landscape” – Billboard
“Masterfully romanticizes existence while evincing the distress of growing pains” – FLAUNT
The alt-tinged tune is laced with tenderness and yearning, depicting the feelings of reckless resignation when diving headfirst into a doomed relationship. The single is accompanied by a music video and the announcement of Boyish’s forthcoming EP “Little Demon Boy“, which will arrive later this summer.
“Kill Your Pain” opens delicately, utilizing a muted, throbbing bass and mellow guitar to create an intimate sonic experience. Just below the mellow instrumentals the track seethes with a frenetic desperation, perfectly captured by lead vocalist India Shore’s resonant alto as she sings, “I want to, say to you / don’t be such a mess just kill your pain / I want to, say to you / heaven, hell it’s all the same”.
The instrumentals slowly build, adding in buzzy, keening guitars and thudding percussion to capture the liminality of an undefined relationship before King Princess joins in, capturing a poignant mixture of the jaded and naive on a verse that is both visceral and eloquent. The tension of the track eventually breaks as guitarist Claire Altendahl lets loose with an eruption of gritty, grimy riffs ending the tune with a breathtaking immediacy.
“We wrote ‘Kill Your Pain’ about being so enmeshed with someone else that you lose your own identity, and in the end sort of succumbing to it and giving into it,” Boyish says of the track. “We wanted it to feel like someone finally realizing they’re in someone else’s hell, accepting it, and giving into some of your darker instincts.
We thought King Princess would be so perfect to be on this song, they have a sort of ‘eat nails’ quality to everything they do, and that’s what the song needed. Working with her was a dream, and so incredibly inspiring.”
King Princess adds “My bass player Logan took me to see Boyish a couple years ago and I was instantly obsessed. They sent me the song and I had to jump on it. The rest is history. Enjoy babies.”
The track’s accompanying music video is playful and cheeky. Decked out in daisy dukes and platform boots, Boyish and King Princess get wet washing a red Mustang convertible. Teetering between irony and authenticity the three artists put an undeniably queer spin on the ‘sexy car wash’ trope and have a ton of fun while doing it.
“So much of the EP we’re working on has been pretty dark, and I think I wanted the video for this song to be just incredibly stupid and fun and a little out of character for us,” Boyish says of the music video. “I think it’s really funny, the idea of us in booty shorts, washing a car in a random apartment complex parking lot. I’ve never been more humbled more in my whole life than when I was editing this footage of myself.”
