A mainstay in London’s queer clubbing scene drops a dancefloor-focussed remix of the September-released single, which raises awareness of postnatal depression
A fixture in London’s queer clubbing scene, Hannah Holland drops a dancefloor-ready remix of ‘Die Young,’ Fi McCluskey’s September single, out now via Mannequin Pussy.
Crafted for the hedonism of a dimly-lit dancefloor, this remix transforms Fi’s brooding, evocative trip-hop track into an indie dance groover. Hannah builds an ecosystem of basslines, pairing the distorted drum refrain with booming disco-style drums. She drenches breathy vocal shots and cascading guitar in delay, allowing them to flood the track, helping it to drift slightly into Balearic territory.
Speaking about the creation of the remix, Hannah says, “I’m a big fan of Fi McCluskey and her solo project, I love the depth of her artistry. Die Young is a powerful statement song and I wanted to respond to it with warmth and catharsis that the dance floor can offer”.
While hypnotic, Hannah Holland’s remix retains the original’s empowering atmosphere, in which Fi tackles cultural perceptions of motherhood, delivering lyrics that highlight the resilience of mothers, showing them they are not alone.
Fi McCluskey, born in Dagenham to Irish parents, is known for raw, honest songwriting. This remix is not the first time she’s forayed onto the floor, having previously collaborated with Josh Caffe and disco crew Horse Meat Disco on ‘Love If You Need It,’ later remixed by Mousse T to 2.5M Spotify streams. She also wrote the standout track ‘It’s Quiet Now’ (4M+ streams) for Honey Dijon’s latest album and recently supported Warmduscher at the O2 Forum.
Since the mid-2000s, Hannah Holland has defined London’s alternative club scene, with electro-tinged techno sets capturing the city’s cultural mix. She’s held residencies at queer parties Trailer Trash, Adonis, and NYC Downlow at Glastonbury and performed marathon sets at Berlin’s Panorama Bar. In 2006, she launched Batty Bass, showcasing artists like Josh Caffe and her own track, ‘Paris’ Acid Ball’. Holland’s remix work spans acts like The Knife and Goldfrapp, and she’s scored for The Visitor and Channel 4’s Adult Material.
Two highly-regarded names in London’s underground music scene come together here. Releasing on Friday, November 8th, Hannah Holland’s ‘Die Young’ remix, simultaneously grooving and empowering, is an essential tool for the floor.
