Popcaan releases Where We Come From 10 Year Deluxe Edition to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the release of his landmark album. The deluxe edition of the album features 3 previously unreleased songs that were initially written during the sessions for Where We Come From, but ultimately not finished in time to be included on the album’s initial release. New songs “Beat The Struggle,” “Don’t Finesse Me” and “Where We Come From (Acoustic)” find Popcaan reunited with producer and Mixpak label head Dre Skull, who executive produced the original album and redefined the sound of contemporary dancehall with Popcaan upon the album’s release.
While Popcaan was already the genre’s rising star prior to the release of Where We Come From and Dre Skull had already left an outsized mark on the genre (notably producing Vybz Kartel’s 2011 album Kingston Story in full), on Popcaan’s debut album he and Dre Skull reimagined what dancehall could be — both in sound and subject matter. The album’s lead single “Everything Nice” was a groundbreaking mix of good times and grief, while the second single “Love Yuh Bad” made a substantial impact, leading to it being sampled on Drake & Rihanna’s five times platinum single “Too Good.” In turn, the album inspired evolution both within the genre and across pop globally as well as earned international acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Complex, The FADER (whose cover Popcaan graced following the album’s release), New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, The Washington Post and more.
