Following on from her first two singles – championed by the likes of Crack Magazine, Jamz Supernova, Shanti Celeste, Gilles Peterson and many more – Marla Kether shares ‘In My Corner’, featuring afrofuturist and vocalist K.O.G (Kweku of Ghana).
The track continues to showcase her remarkable ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical genres and influences into her music; drawing from her unique and extensive experience in Afrobeat, Global House, and Congolese Soukous, on ‘In My Corner’ she creates a lively and mesmerising fusion that transcends cultural boundaries
A heavy Dembow groove, layered live Latin percussion, legato Moog bass synth and a syncopated bass guitar provide the backbone of this dancefloor gem. The ecstatic vocal expressions andfluttering adlibs of K.O.G. are woven between bouncy Soukous guitar riffs reminiscent of Kanda Bongo Man, all while an infectious clapping clavé rhythm steers the track ahead. Marla’s music represents a meeting point for different regions, diasporas, and musical traditions, showcasing a deep understanding and connection to these diverse styles that have influenced Marla through her own connections.
Exceeding 23 million Spotify streams for her work as a session bassist (Yazmin Lacey, Oscar Jerome, Obongjayar), and having toured globally as a core member of Loyle Carner’s band, Marla now has 5 brilliant global dancefloor tracks ready to roll out under her own name this year, with a new tune dropping approx every 6 weeks, culminating as an EP in October 2023.
Marla will be playing some of the UK/Europe’s biggest festivals this year as bassist for Loyle Carner. During this time she will also be playing her own DJ gigs and live band shows, with bookings including Love Saves The Day, Forwards Festival, Highrise Festival and London’s iconic NinetyOne Living Room.
Marla is releasing through Saffron Records, the Bristol-based label and respected non-profit organisation making considerable waves in innovative music tech circles, on a mission to uplift women, trans and non-binary artists – https://www.instagram.com/SaffronRecords.
