Blending Surinamese roots with cutting-edge club sounds – first single taken from upcoming project
Producer-to-watch Lamsi fuses sound and cultures on the first single from his upcoming Dimi EP, ‘Tyar Faya’, a collaboration with Angolan-born, Lisbon-based producer Vanyfox, and Surinamese vocalist Afu Sensi, out February 14th on The Herd Records.
‘Tyar Faya’, which means “bring fire” in Sranan Tongo, a Creole language spoken in Suriname that blends English, Dutch, Portuguese, and various West African languages, is a high-energy fusion of Surinamese Kawina and Angolan Batida, blending tradition with modern electronic sounds. Vanyfox, a key figure in the Batida scene and a member of the Moonshine Collective from Montreal, brings his signature percussive grooves to the track. Afu Sensi’s lyrics, sung in Surinamese, deepen the cultural authenticity.
“Inspired by how Jamaican patois resonates globally, I wanted to introduce Surinamese culture in a fresh and relatable way,” explains Lamsi. “Afu Sensi’s UK-inspired vocals add an international edge, blending tradition with modernity, creating a track that feels rooted yet globally connected.”
The moreish and magnetic Amsterdam-based Lamsi, a mainstay in the Dutch capital’s experimental club scene—rooted in Surinamese culture—blends grime, Afro-diasporic electronica, deconstructed breaks, and traditional Kawina rhythms. A resident DJ in Paris and London, his dynamic DJ sets traverse grime, trap, breaks, and globally-adored R&B, breaking borders and genre conventions.
Since his breakout hits ‘Give It 2 Me Now’ and Bambii’s ‘Slip Slide’ with Ragz Originale, Lamsi has caused a stir globally, quickly being tapped up by the likes of Unknown T, Jarreau Vandal, and Ragz Originale for collaborations. Making his Boiler Room debut in 2023 (Watch HERE), then named by Clash Music as an “Artist Who Could Define 2024”, last year he worked with Grime icon JME and £MONZO on the track ‘S.I.T. PT.2’, and later released the heavy-hitting single ‘Scat Track’, a collaboration with Lunice and Bianca Oblivion, which came out on LuckyMe in November.
This is the first glimpse of Lamsi’s forthcoming EP, Dimi, which will be released on May 30th. Dimi is a deeply personal project for Lamsi, paying tribute to his late cousin Dimitri, whose passion for music shaped his creative journey. The EP blends Surinamese kawina rhythms with gqom, grime, afro house, and global club music, capturing the essence of both tradition and innovation. Inspired by Dimi’s love for experimental sounds, Lamsi crafts a genre-spanning collection that celebrates his heritage and pushes Surinamese music onto a global stage.
