Stepping aside from R&B and pushing a natural progression into the realm of Indie-Soul, Mariella is an artist and story-teller whose music instantly demands your attention. As we gear up to the release of her forthcoming debut EP ‘Deeper Than You’, arriving May 1st, the London-based singer-songwriter has gifted listeners with a euphoric and genre-bending single named, “Bittersweet”. Recently gracing the cover of Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds UK & IE’ playlist, Mariella has gained further support from NPR Music, BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing, Ones To Watch, and many more.

As we steer closer to her headline show [18/06] at the Servant Jazz Quarters in London, “Bittersweet” stands as a taste of what’s yet to come from the trailblazer. Enriched with melancholy, “Bittersweet” boasts Mariella’s signature silk-like tone and captivating lyricism. Navigating an unexpected end to a relationship, the singer-songwriter captures the overwhelming sense of confusion that’s often associated with love and loss. Reminiscing on the memories made whilst reminding them of their hurtful actions, Mariella continues to build a bridge of relatability with an ever-growing audience through her use of vulnerability.

Speaking on inspiration behind the release, Mariella explained, “I took a slightly different approach to writing this song. I’m usually quite elusive with lyrics and don’t really make too overtly personal references. Believe it or not, I am quite private and sometimes find it to be so open about my intimate life. I write songs about everything that’s going on emotionally, but I will mask the personal details & avoid being too literal. But in this song, I wanted the person I was writing about to know it was about them if and when they heard it.”

Mariella went on to explain, “Bittersweet is a song about conflicting feelings – longing, loss, sadness, hope. I had been processing a very sudden & unexpected end to a relationship in the summer, going through the motions of heartbreak. I was feeling much stronger and coming to a place of acceptance, then as if the universe wanted to test me, I ran into this person in my neighbourhood a few weeks later. It brought up so many confusing feelings at the time.”

Mariella’s Bio
Having left school at seventeen to pursue music, Mariella has been honing her craft ever since. Mesmerised by female guitarists with powerful voices, her earliest songwriting experiences were inspired by the likes of Lianne La Havas, Lauryn Hill and Bonnie Raitt, leading her to pick up the guitar & later graduate from BIMM with a songwriting degree. Emerging alongside the sound of UK RnB & soul, she has already shared the studio with an array of musical peers, songwriters & established producers.

Fast forward to now, Mariella’s sound has evolved to balance both the delicate & powerful in her range, her songs are laced with sensitive, passionate and vulnerable storytelling as she observes and learns to navigate the world around her. Influenced by the likes of Jorja Smith, Sabrina Claudio and Sinead Harnett, her soft vocal tones & heartfelt lyrics are laid over sultry, emotive yet alternative productions.

Boasting only a handful of singles, Mariella has already seen tastemaker support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Arielle Free and Victoria Jane on their ‘Future Artists’ & ‘Future Soul’ shows. As well as Spotify support on ‘New Music Friday UK’, ‘R&B UK’, ‘New Pop UK’, ‘Fresh Finds UK & IE’ [Cover], and many more.
