Emerging from the scenic landscapes of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands, the innovative jazz group GØ is thrilled to unveil their latest musical creation. The band just released “Loysing í dós” (loosely translated as “Canned Independence”), the powerful lead single from their forthcoming album ‘Ævir, amen’, which is set for release on November 8th, 2024. This album features nine compelling tracks that are poised to solidify GØ’s position in the global jazz scene.

The controversial first single, “Loysing í dós,” is addressing the century-long Faroese struggle between independence and union. The track opens with a sampled speech from former “Republic Youth” leader Rúni Nielsen, listing all the reasons why “Loysing Krevst” (“Independence is needed”). Then the horns kick in, transforming the track into a powerful and vibey march, complete with an anthemic chorus that drives a powerful message.

GØ explores the sensitive and timely issue of Denmark’s control over the Faroe Islands. Currently, some of the most critical decisions impacting the Faroe Islands are made through Denmark, raising important questions about self-governance. This debate is driven by linguistic and cultural differences between the two regions, as well as a strong desire among many Faroese people to have the final say on matters concerning the islands and their surrounding territories.

When discussing the single, frontman and guitarist Ólavur Gaard expressed: “I believe we were inspired by the heated political climate surrounding the Faroese independence issue. More and more countries are interested in monitoring the area surrounding the Faroe Islands, as currently the Faroese people do not have full control over important matters.”

Founded in 2015 by a quartet of audacious young musicians,  breathes life into the music scene with their rebellious spirit and boundary-breaking compositions. Drawing inspiration from the sixties and seventies, GØ’s music transports listeners to a bygone era while infusing it with a contemporary edge. Their eclectic sound fuses elements of jazz, rock, and cinematic influences resulting in a unique auditory experience.

Since the release of their first album “” (2020, I TUTL), the band and its sought-after musicians have become a vital part of the rapidly growing Faroese music scene.  captivates audiences with every performance through their infectious energy and flair for experimentation. The group’s seamless interplay keeps listeners on the edge of their seats, always eager to see what will happen next.

GØ’s debut album offered a fresh, modern take on the free jazz genre, drawing significant local attention and establishing the band as a key player in the Faroese jazz scene. Now, four years later,  is set to release their second album, “Ævir, amen.” The thematic and aesthetic concept for the album is a commentary on various Faroese cultural and political matters. This new album features nine tracks written by frontmen Ólavur Eyðunsson Gaard and Kristian Pauli Ellefsen.

After a somewhat DYI approach when producing their first album, this time around  has collaborated with producer Per Ingvald Højgaard Petersen (known for his work with Eivør, Lea Kampmann, EMP). This collaboration turned fruitful in elevating GØ’s sound, making it even more focused and unique. Additionally, the new album includes five-piece horn arrangements on several tracks, enriching the music with added complexity while preserving the integrity of the compositions.
