Undeniably one of the most exciting voices in the pool of rising female talent right now, Emilia Tarrant justifies this status with her single “Worst Boyfriend Award”, which released last Friday. To assert this bold, new chapter in the lead up to her debut album, Tarrant brims with moody defiance and unquestionable confidence in the accompanying music video, landing today – 7th June.
Coursing with her signature effervescent sound, a synth-sensation, “Worst Boyfriend Award” is in equal part forward thinking, and in equal part a plausible soundtrack to a 80’s coming-of-age film. Landing not only as a reminder of Emilia’s prowess as an accomplished writer, the single also showcase’s Emilia’s unchallenged musical versatility, as an artist who can effortlessly glide from tender ballads, to punchy pop anthems.
Shifting her perspective on “Worst Boyfriend Award”, Emilia captures the frustrations of watching your girl-friend waste her time on someone who doesn’t deserve her. Bringing the sentiment of this to life, the video see’s Tarrant participate as both the protagonist and the by-stander as she narrates her frustrating stand-point.
In her own words, she explains; “Tom Knibbs (director) and I wanted to create a video that was a direct visual for the song, using the lyrics to guide our ideas. I loved playing the 3rd person perspective on the relationship. When planning the video I remember saying I wanted to have fairy godmother vibes, but with a lot of attitude. Having actors play a couple in my video for the first time was so cool too! We created a number of different scenes that portrayed the emotion of the girl in the relationship, alongside the repetition of the guys’ ‘flaws’. This repetition was all a build up to the dramatic end scene where we see her go mental and start trashing the room. I love the metaphoric side to this as right at the end, the room cuts back to how it was before, and we find out that it was just all in her head. Everything about this video perfectly captures the story behind the song and I’m so proud of how it turned out.”
With two EP’s and over 2 and a half million streams accumulatively across releases, “Worst Boyfriend Award” is Emilia Tarrant’s first introduction to her next body of work, her debut album. Having already performed at Glastonbury Festival, worked with some of the top producers in the UK (including Ed Sheeran’s associates) and been passionately supported by BBC Radio 1, the burgeoning songstress is more than ready to release a wider body of work to an eagerly awaiting fan-base.
For a chance to see Emilia live, she will be headlining an all female force on July 29th at Southampton’s, Heartbreaks – grab tickets here
