Vancouver’s rising rockstar EKKSTACY shares “chicago,” the final single taken from his self-titled new album out next Friday. The single, which debuted on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show yesterday, is a powerful ode to its namesake city with a catchy pop-punk opening riff and a fiery guitar solo that bookend a somber reflection of the dissociative nature of being on tour and longing to stay in one place for more than a few days. That sensation, and the essence of creative mania that Stacy channels into his music, is captured in his recent GQ Hype story which describes him as “tying together two of his generation’s most pervasive musical threads—indie rock and SoundCloud rap—in a whole new way.”
With his forthcoming album, which includes the previously-released “bella,” “i can’t find anyone” and “goo lagoon,” EKKSTACY is concocting a timeless blend of sounds that exist in the crevices between subgenres like shoegaze, post-punk and surf rock. The album, like Stacy’s live show, propels forward at a breakneck pace with fleeting moments of tenderness that offer glimpses of the intimacy that coexists in his songwriting alongside the chaos, like his lead single “problems” featuring Trippie Redd.
EKKSTACY is the most dynamic version of the raw and frantic sound he first emerged onto the scene with on widely-celebrated debut NEGATIVE. The breakout single from that debut project “i walk this earth all by myself” was recently RIAA certified Gold and now totals over 180M streams across platforms. Recorded with frequent collaborators Mangetsu and Apob between long stints on tour and festival plays over the course of the last two years, it’s an autobiographical reflection on his life as a musician and the highs and lows of the solitude that comes with creating music and touring. He’s continued to hone that sound alongside Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, The Drums, etc), who mixed his new self-titled LP and his previous album Misery.
Following the album’s release, EKKSTACY will take his frenetic live show on an extended North American and European tour with Alex Sucks beginning in Toronto in February. The tour will consist of a first leg across the east coast and south before embarking to Europe for a set of dates including sold out shows in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Berlin and Cologne before returning to the US in May for the second leg of the tour on the west coast.
