New York City’s duendita announces their new project a strong desire to survive due April 4th via 10k. The 10-track project embeds the listener into duendita’s spellbinding realm and follows the lauded EP the mind is a miracle released last year. Alongside the announcement of a strong desire to survive, duendita shares the song “baby teeth.” Speaking about the new song, duendita says, “‘baby teeth’ celebrates the joy of healing from the darkest experiences. It’s a piano vocal banger about feeling safe and strong.” At the end of “baby teeth” is a sample of 9 vocalists, singing in harmony as a choir – all recorded in duendita’s bedroom. “It was so special,” says duendita on the process.
a strong desire to survive was born from duendita’s transformative experience during their first extended trip to Berlin where they first met longtime collaborators Noah Becker and Anton Remy. “We would jam all the time at Baketown, our recording studio and art space in Schoenberg. It was an era where I’d write on their beats or at the piano, and I couldn’t stop writing about the pain,” they share, “all these bangers came out about how badly I wanted to live and overcome it all.”
The upcoming project’s visual direction is equally as poignant as its musical heart. duendita enlisted friend and artist Kiyomi Taylor to create the cover art, which features an image of a deep-sea creature who has adapted to survive in the most grotesque way. “She’s grown long nails, gills, scales, and killer teeth, just to survive. At first glance, the man in the image looks like her next meal, but in reality, she wishes she could hold someone without scratching or hurting them,” duendita explains. “This image mirrors the themes of the project – survival, transformation, and the struggle to love and be loved.”
This May, duendita will support MIKE for a run of nine shows, including stops in Sacramento, Vancouver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Omaha and more. The MIKE support dates are bookended by duendita’s headline show in Los Angeles at 2220 Arts on May 9th followed by their Chicago show at Constellation on May 23rd. Tickets available HERE and full live dates below.
duendita is a band from Queens, New York. They write and produce their own music, imbuing it with a reverence for their ancestry, community, and faith. Anchored by achy, bass-coated tones and mix of jazz, piano, soul and R&B, duendita’s music is evocative of the complexities and sentimentality of the human experience. Flowing in various shapes and formations, duendita is a living collaborative project made with family and friends across mediums and cities.
