London-based Zimbabwean singer-songwriter Ananya is back with her most introspective single yet, “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold”. Set for release on 21 February 2025, the indie-pop track is a haunting exploration of broken trust, emotional resilience, and the stark contrast between illusion and reality.
Blending poetic lyricism with ethereal production, “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold” unfolds as a slow-burning confession, layered with melancholic melodies and raw emotion. Ananya’s vocals drift between vulnerability and quiet strength, mirroring the painful yet necessary process of realising that what once sparkled was never truly golden.
“All That Glitters Isn’t Gold” presents yet another layer of Ananya’s storytelling—one that reflects on illusion, self-worth, and the moment clarity replaces denial. Written mid-flight and later brought to life with UK producer Patch Boshell, the track evolved from a simple piano melody into a richly textured piece that captures the weight of unspoken truths. Its unconventional structure—rising tension that ultimately crashes into silence—mirrors the song’s central theme: the quiet realisation that some lessons linger long after the moment has passed. Ananya continues to establish herself as a rising voice in indie-pop, drawing inspiration from the likes of Lorde and Gracie Abrams. With “All That Glitters Isn’t Gold”, she signals the start of a compelling new chapter—one that promises more releases leading up to her highly anticipated second project.
When asked about the release Ananya explained, “This song is really about drawing back your boundaries after you feel they’ve been taken for granted. There’s frustration, disappointment, and the sting of knowing you gave too much—but ultimately, there’s power in choosing yourself.”
Following the success of her debut EP ‘i woke up one night’, which is nearing an impressive 1 million streams since its release in October 2023; Ananya has steadily built momentum with a string of deeply personal and sonically rich singles, including “Emotions” and “Happy”.Released in August 2024, “Emotions” became an empowering pop anthem about healing and setting boundaries. Born from a raw journal entry and transformed into a soaring track, it captured the emotional complexity of letting go. In October, “Happy” arrived with an introspective twist—paired with a cinematic music video shot in Scarborough, Cape Town. Released during Mental Health Awareness Month, the song navigated the contrast between surface-level joy and the deeper struggles we often mask.
