Amindi releases her new mixtape Take What You Need today via EQT recordings. Leading up to the project’s official release, Amindi offered three unique singles in “it’s not feeling good anymore,” “green house” and “diddy crop” to demonstrate her goal for the project: showcasing her range through a spectrum of songs that fit different moods and environments. Those three singles landed her a spot on Pigeons & Planes’ Best New Artists list of August 2023, and now the palette is expanded further with the full 15-track project out now.
Describing Take What You Need, Amindi notes how the mixtape is, “like if I burned you a CD of songs that I like that’s still enjoyable on shuffle.” From reimagined Y2K hyper-femme production on “pocket” feat. Kenny Mason to unabashed confidence on “diddy crop,” and tales of the self-isolation that comes with heartbreak on “nightmare” feat. Franny London this latest project highlights Amindi’s natural storytelling abilities that speak to a range of real emotions and experiences. For Amindi, the sheer breadth of her multifaceted project makes sure there’s something for everybody to enjoy—for everyone to, like the title says, take what they need.
Coming up in the age of the Internet, the Jamaican American artist first got her start posting her songs in the early days of SoundCloud in 2013. “My high school gave us iPads with GarageBand my freshman year, and I’d make little beats, record, and upload them onto SoundCloud,” Amindi says. One thing led to another, and her dancehall-inspired track “Pine and Ginger” with Tessellated and Valleyz went viral on the platform her senior year—catapulting Amindi into the spotlight at just 17 years old.
Amindi describes her current unique, genre-melding style as “pastel rap,” a perfect encapsulation of how much she values songwriting and her soft, easygoing sound—“I consider myself a rapper deep down because I value the word,” she explains. “But it’s pastel because if you listen, you’d feel a little pink.”
