Following the release of recent singles ‘Evelyn‘, which was playlisted at BBC Radio 2, and subsequent Tennessee Williams-inspired ‘Summer & Smoke‘, Bear’s Den have now released their eagerly-awaited new EP ‘First Loves‘. The EP contemplates some of the more seldom seen elements of falling in love and the turmoil that can come with it.
Principal songwriter Andrew Davie explains adding, “It’s a record about falling in love for the first time and the different experiences of falling in love at various stages of life. From a young person experiencing love for the very first time to the end of the EP which is about becoming a parent and discovering a different kind of parental love for the first time. We really wanted to capture the intimacy of those experiences with the enormity of the feelings that come with them.”
While ‘Evelyn‘ tackles unrequited love, new single ‘Helen Of Hammersmith Bridge‘ conjures mythological figures in a modern setting to illustrate the enormity of falling completely and entirely for someone and the total loss of control many feel during those early stages as you surrender yourself, taking enormous leaps of faith towards one another; ‘Like I have a choice, my world you could destroy / But still I can’t help but reach my hand across the void.’ and how easy it can become to lose sight of yourself when the world around you suddenly becomes rose-tinted.
The EP’s final track ‘Teach Me Ava‘, marks the most deeply personal moment within the new collection. Written just before the birth of Andrew Davie’s daughter, a period of great anxiety and excitement for him, this final cut looks to heighten the love between a father and his daughter. How you can love someone so precious from the moment they are born, but also learn and grow because of them, creating a love that is almost immeasurable and unlike anything else.
