DEBUT SINGLE ACCUMULATED OVER 43,000 ORGANIC STREAMS INDEPENDENTLY IN UNDER 3 MONTHS
“..a sultry showcase of her luscious vocals and vivid songwriting. Backed by jazz-inflected chords and snappy production, the track is groovy, confident, and tenderly cinematic” – Wonderland
Underlined with lucious vocals, frank lyricism, and sprinkled with an irresistibly chic aesthetic, contemporary soul newcomer Darcy Toyn is continuing to cement her one-to-watch status with her latest biopic single, “Orange”. Following on from her debut mark “June” [accumulating over 40K streams in 3 months independently] earlier this summer, the singer-songwriter has evoked a burgeoning anticipation across social media as supporters await her sophomore release.
Accommodating a dreamscape laced with subtle guitar licks and live band elements courtesy of Sebastian Green, “Orange” narrates an honest portrayal of self-discovery as Darcy Toyn details the intricacies of her alter ego. Building a bridge of relatability through her unshielded and quirky penmanship, Darcy’s lilting toplines dance effortlessly around the ingenious instrumentation. Showcasing her studious tendencies as she draws from various genres including soul, jazz, R&B and alternative sounds, “Orange” houses an infectious hook and head-bobbing percussion that instantly leaves you wanting more.
Speaking on inspiration behind “Orange” Darcy Toyn explained, “Orange is about my alter ego, ‘Betty Boop’ who I step into when I’m performing. I began writing lyrics about who she is and realised that everything I was describing, I already was. But, I was either too scared or too naive to admit it. The song ended up becoming an ode to her and all the wit and edge she carries!
The title ‘Orange’ came around as I was writing this song. I have met numerous spiritual people that have always told me that my aura was orange, and felt as though my energy was the colour orange. It’s always been a colour and mood that I resonate with so much, it was the perfect title for the record!”
Hailing from East Sussex, Darcy Toyn is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter who has been infatuated with music from a youthful age. Growing up listening to jazz, soul, and alternative genres, the newcomer has formed a unique sound reminiscent of Olivia Dean, Tom Misch, and Mathilda Homer. Unveiling her debut release “June” earlier this year, gaining support from Wonderland Magazine, Rinse FM and BBC Introducing, Darcy Toyn has since gained a growing fan-base that spans the UK’s borders. Finding joy through experimentation, Darcy’s jazzy chord progressions, and buttery vocals construct a timeless sound that people of all age’s can resonate with. Working closely with Steve Chisanthou [Corrine Bailey-Rae co writer & producer] as well as receiving mix and mastering support from Claude Vause [Beabadoobee and Laufey], Darcy is gearing supporters up for more music.
