Today, rising South Florida rapper PlayThatBoiZay announces his new project VIP, due August 23rd via Loma Vista Recordings. The announcement arrives alongside his new single “LIL JIT” featuring Atlanta rapper Kenny Mason. The single weaves together Zay and Kenny’s raw energy with a rebellious guitar production that shows both artists unfiltered and tenacious spirit. VIP will include three previously released singles: the gloomy and catchy “MOOD SWINGS” with Mike Dimes, the frenetic “TEMPLE RUN” and “HOODLUMZ” with Denzel Curry and A$AP Rocky.
Sharing a note on Instagram, Zay states, “I been through so much and I’ve never let my problems define me. I always put myself first. That’s what VIP is about. It’s the acknowledgement that your existence is important and putting yourself first without anyone’s approval.”
PlayThatBoiZay originally debuted “MOOD SWINGS” on The Mischievous Cypher with On The Radar alongside frequent collaborator Denzel Curry. The track “HOODLUMZ” with Denzel Curry and A$AP Rocky also appeared on Denzel’s highly praised mixtape Kind of the Mischievous South Vol. 2, released last month, was recently performed by Denzel and Zay in a special BBC session in London. The track also helped Zay gain over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
VIP is a portrait of pain and hedonism that offers us an intimate glimpse into Zay’s world. Zay started recording in 2020, just days after getting dumped by his then-girlfriend. Working with UK producer Kwes Darko in Los Angeles over the course of a month, Zay used the album as an opportunity to open up about his feelings of frustration, betrayal, and loss. Across VIP, Zay’s powerfully gritty voice and ear for industrial, bass-heavy production create a singular and unpredictable sound, elevated by features from A$AP Rocky, JPEGMafia, Denzel Curry, Kenny Mason, and Mike Dimes.
The album’s release was put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic and a subsequent near-fatal car wreck in May 2021, which left Zay unable to walk and in a state of amnesia for months. After an extensive healing process, Zay opened for Denzel Curry’s tour in 2022 and returned to VIP with a fresh perspective.
Zay was first encouraged to rap by his Carol City High School classmate Denzel Curry in 2015. Zay was working at the Cheesecake Factory his senior year when a chance run-in with Curry, who was on a date there, marked the start of their lasting creative relationship. Zay was featured on “P.A.T” from Curry’s critically acclaimed 2019 project ZUU and 2021 single “Bad Luck.” In 2022, Zay joined Curry on his fall North American tour, where he performed as an opener alongside AG Club and redveil. The following year Zay reunited with Curry and his longtime collaborator Ronny J to release “WOO,” an homage to the sound that became synonymous with 2010’s South Florida rap. Denzel recently praised Zay in a recent interview on The Ebro Show and shared more about their unexpected encounter back in 2015.
