Mk.gee’s debut album, Two Star & The Dream Police, is out now. The album is a singular work from the sonic architect Michael Gordon and has been an object of frenzied internet speculation since it was first announced. The record and its accompanying visual, directed by Danica Arias Kleinknecht, find Mk.gee in perpetual motion, performing aboard a retired school bus and hanging out the window on a winding country drive.
Mk.gee first introduced Two Star & The Dream Police with the dueling tones of “Candy” and “How many miles,” the latter of which glimmered with the signature guitar tone that has prompted its own research. His second chapter included “Are You Looking Up” and “You got it.” Then came the antagonist’s anthem in “Dream police,” along with the unsettling nighttime ride that introduces the album’s world.
Having developed a signature sound across three EPs between 2018 and 2020, Mk.gee is exploring new territory with this debut album. In late 2023, Mk.gee previewed his unheard material with five sold-out shows accompanied by bandmates Dijon and Andrew Aged. The dimly lit shows centered attention on the music as the band experimented with the songs in real-time, building unique experiences each night. Mk.gee’s sound has been evolving over the past several years hand-in-hand with his critical contributions to Dijon’s 2021 album Absolutely and subsequent tour dates with the likes of Bon Iver and boygenius.
