CDMX and Hermosillo, Mexico-based experimental trio Meth Math announces their debut album Chupetones, due February 2nd, 2024 via In Real Life. Following their ethereal lead single “Mantis,” which was co-produced and mixed by Nick León (Rosalia, Denzel Curry, Isabella Lovestory) and was paired with a stunning visual directed by Alejandra Washington, Meth Math offers another equally engaging new taste of their debut with new single “Myspace.” The cyber-fever-dream video of “Myspace” was directed by Antonella Dellarossa & José Ramón Sahagún.

Elaborating on the meaning of “Myspace,” Meth Math shares, “‘Myspace’ is a medieval-emo reggaeton song about the nostalgia of losing a friend, who happened to be a ghost that somehow got trapped inside the deep web. We wanted to have a song that elaborated on the strong feelings that were witnessed by obsolete social networks, so in a sense this is part of a case study in our journey to understand technology better.

Young people from the 2000s were all Tom’s friends and all of them were exposed to the subliminal messages about obedience that big corporations started injecting into the tubes, even from back then. So in a way ‘Myspace’ serves as an experiment that is driven by some sort of Internet archaeology, analyzing the tragic end of a virtual relationship within the context of one of the very first digital communities to ever exist.”

Additionally, Meth Math announces a string of headline shows in the United States slated for April 2024. The 7-date tour will begin in Seattle on April 2nd with stops in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn before wrapping up in Washington, D.C. on April 13th. Full tour routing and ticket details can be found below. Tickets go on sale this Friday, December 8th 10am local time.

Chupetones was created with a freeform mentality. The trio focused on the recording process first and arranging the compositions later, stringing together quirky stories from segments of frantic creation that allowed songs to come together inspired by instantaneous feeling rather than a pre-conceived message. On the debut album, the band maintains that DIY energy in their recording sessions, where the three met in studios in Hermosillo and Mexico City, with a blank slate, eager to share and build upon the experiences each of them had while apart. Chupetones cements Meth Math’s lead amongst this boundless new generation of Latin artists and builds on the dichotomy the Mexican trio has always existed in: a gothic party that plays between the sacred and the profane, between neo-perreo and new age emo. The nine songs that make up this new collection are at once odes to heartbreak and invitations to the deep darkness of a post-apocalyptic club.

Meth Math has found tangible inspiration in the visuals and sound of musicians like Enya and Autechre along with spiritual inspiration from Mexican pop artists Bela Nova, Gloria Trevi and Belinda. The Meth Math sound comes directly from the energy in clubs and working alongside the likes of renowned Miami-based producer Nick León, and this album finds the trio’s focus shifting from making bedroom studio music to imagining the album through the lens of its corresponding live performance – a raucous and dream-like party that only Meth Math could dream up.

Since the release of their Pompi EP in 2020 and m♡rtal EP in 2022, Meth Math has paved their own lane of shadowy and experimental reggaeton and electronica. Comprised of the aforementioned vocalist Ángel Ballesteros and the producers Error.Error and Bonsai Babies, Meth Math has established an aesthetic all their own and collaborated with electronic contemporaries like Sega Bodega, Machine Girl, Dinamarca, Blue Rojo and more. Last year, Meth Math performed at the iconic Boiler Room: New York City, which was curated by Shayne Oliver (Anonymous Club, Hood By Air), alongside Bladee, Ecco2k, and Baby Sosa, in addition to making their Mexican festival debut at Ceremonia.

Meth Math just wrapped a run of tour dates in Asia across Korea, China, Japan and Taiwan. This Thursday, Ángel of Meth Math will perform a live show at Art Basel in Miami alongside celebrated DJ and producer Nick León.
