Marla Kether’s reintroduction to the music industry as a solo-artist is as refreshingly bold as it is sonically-diverse. Her latest single ‘In My Corner’ takes the listener on an Afrofuturist-journey through the multitude of musical traditions boasted by the African diaspora.
‘In My Corner’ acts as a multilayered, multicultural, melodic canvas of sorts – featuring elements of Kether’s own Congolese roots, featured artist K.O.G’s mesmerizing Ghanian vocals, and spiced with dashes of Caribbean beats and Latin American Samba-esque instrumentals.
Despite the playful pairings of an array of styles and traditions – it’s Kether’s masterful basslines which act as the true driving force behind the tropical dancehall breeze that is ‘In My Corner’. Kether’s rhythmic prowess and creative fearlessness is reminiscent of bass masters from both past and present, like Jaco Pastorius and Thundercat.
A third of the way through ‘In My Corner’, listeners can’t help but find themselves in the mystical conundrum of a body lost to dance with a mind lost in trance; a blissful out-of-body experience leaving the soul happily wandering somewhere between the warm comfort of tradition and the exhilaration of exploration; somewhere on the sonic-plane of Afrofuturism’s spirited frontier.
‘In My Corner’ is one of five dancehall tracks Kether plans on releasing every six-weeks in the lead-up to her debut solo EP – set for an October 2023 release through Bristol-based Saffron Records.
Marla Kether’s exquisite catalogue of work as a session-bassist with the likes of Yazmin Lacey, Oscar Jerome, Obongjayar, amongst others, have not only accumulated over 23 million streams to-date, but have established her as one of the finest session bassists in the industry today. Marla will also be touring as the bassist for Loyle Carner throughout some of the most acclaimed festivals in Europe and the UK this summer.
